Mark Clayborne demonstrates an artful eye for direction in this hip-hop drama. The story revolves around Ron (Brice McMillon), an aspiring young rapper who, despite his success, ends up with the short end of the stick. Though his album is at the top of the charts, Ron isn't seeing the rewards. His growing fame hasn't lead to the lavish lifestyle Ron believes he has earned, and he still lives in a crummy apartment the size of a shoebox. Ron soon learns that everyone in the music industry cannot be trusted when he realizes he's being scammed by Ace (Maliek Ramsey), the head of his record company (Murder One Records). Now, Ron has to figure out a way to get the money he deserves. What sets THE RECORD DEAL apart from other urban dramas is not its plotline, but its genuine performances. The characters here stand out for their credibility. McMillon gives an earnest performance as Ron, who despite his violent track history, honestly wants to change and do things right. Ron is different from most rapper, tough-guy characters because he actually possesses dimension, and is not afraid to show his emotions.
